[UPDATED]   The City Council has selected Mike Futrell as Pasadena’s next city manager, with an expected start date of May 13, officials announced.

Futrell, who currently serves as city manager of Riverside, brings more than three decades of public-sector experience, including 18 years in executive leadership roles, according to the City.

The appointment follows what City officials described as an extensive national search process aimed at identifying a seasoned leader to guide Pasadena through major initiatives and ongoing challenges.

Mayor Victor Gordo praised both the selection process and Futrell’s qualifications, while also recognizing outgoing City Manager Miguel Márquez.

“On behalf of the entire City Council, I want to express our deep appreciation to outgoing City Manager Miguel Márquez for his dedicated and effective service to the people of Pasadena,” Gordo said. “His leadership has helped guide our city through important challenges and opportunities, and we are grateful for his commitment.”

Gordo also highlighted Futrell’s experience and leadership style.

“Mike is a seasoned, proven city manager whose experience, collaborative approach, and steady leadership will serve Pasadena well,” Gordo said. “He brings a skill set that will help us confront the complex issues facing our community—both now and in the years ahead.”

Futrell said he is honored to take on the role and stressed his long career in public service.

“I have spent my life in public service, from the U.S. Navy to elected office to leadership roles at the federal, state, and local levels,” Futrell said. “The unique blend of experiences I’ve gained has prepared me to lead a dynamic and forward-looking city like Pasadena.”

He added that Pasadena already holds personal significance for him and his family.

“Pasadena holds a special place in my family’s life,” Futrell said. “I look forward to collaborating with the Council, staff, and community members to advance the City’s priorities and ensure Pasadena’s continued success.”

City officials said Futrell’s early priorities will include advancing the Reconnecting Pasadena 710 Vision Plan, supporting Eaton Fire recovery efforts, and continuing the City’s transition to carbon-free electricity by 2030.

During his tenure in Riverside and previous leadership roles, Futrell has overseen major capital projects, economic development initiatives and large municipal operations, including utilities and public-private partnerships.

Officials said his experience leading cities through growth and infrastructure expansion, along with a focus on community engagement and transparency, positioned him as a strong fit for Pasadena’s next phase of leadership.
