District 3 Pasadena City Councilmember Justin Jones of District 3 led a team of City officials at a community meeting on Thursday, Nov. 2, to address residents’ concerns at Kings Village Apartments near the Robinson Park Recreation Center and provide updates in the wake of a recent shooting that left one man dead and another injured.
The shooting occurred on Monday, Oct. 23, and claimed the life of 26-year-old Pasadena resident Cecilio Hernandez Ramirez Jr. It also left a 17-year-old young man injured.
Police said they received a ShotSpotter automated gunshot alert and 911 calls at about 7:46 p.m. pointing them to Morton Avenue and West Hammond Street outside the Kings Village complex. Responding units found the victims there, police said.
Both men were taken to a hospital, where Ramirez was pronounced dead.
Councilmember Jones met with the families of the victims and residents throughout the apartment complex last week.
Thursday’s meeting was a follow-up and included City Manager Miguel Márquez, Deputy Chief of Police Art Chute, Interim Director of Public Health Manual Carmona, and local gang interventionist Ricky Pickens.
“I found out about the shooting during a Council meeting,” Jones said on Thursday night. “Miguel and I stayed late after Council and began talking with the Chief and Ricky. I am here this evening to bring City resources to you. So you can ask questions and get answers. Every resident deserves to feel safe in their home.”
The residents at Kings Village talked about the lack of on-site security and cameras. Jones said he intends to meet with the property owner and manager to advocate for increased security measures.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the shooting. They are also urging anyone with information about the case to come forward.
