Council Is Dark, Elections on the Horizon

The City Council is dark for the next two weeks in honor of Memorial Day and Election Day, respectively.

On Tuesday, June 2 local residents will elect Councilmembers in district 3, 5 and 7.

Incumbents Justin Jones, Jess Rivas and Jason Lyon are seeking reelection in a race that has seen little action from two challengers.

Erica Margarita Muñoz and Alethea O’Toole qualified to run against Jones and Lyon, but have done little campaigning.

Rivas is running unopposed.

Muñoz unsuccessfully applied for the city’s rental board recently.

Meanwhile, the incumbents have continued to campaign and reach out to voters.

Jones is a licensed civil engineer and a civil engineer with Los Angeles County Public Works. His current role is to help administer the Safe Clean Water Program, which provides local, dedicated funding to increase our local water supply, improve water quality and protect public health.

He chairs the Municipal Services Committee and is a member of the Public Safety Committee and the Housing, Homelessness and Planning Committee.

Rivas, an attorney, currently serves as vice mayor and chairs the Public Safety Committee.

According to her bio on the city’s website, she currently works in District 5 as a staff counsel for the Los Angeles County Employees Retirement Association. She previously served on the city’s Northwest Commission and the Commission on the Status of Women.

She graduated from Princeton University and New York University School of Law.

Lyon, also an attorney, is a member of the Municipal Services, Economic Development and Technology, and Housing, Homelessness and Planning committees, as well as the ad hoc committee on the development of the former 710 stub. Lyon also serves on the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority and as the mayor’s alternate to the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments.
