Council Will Issue ADA Anniversary Proclamation, Tout Public Engagement Initiatives

The Pasadena City Council is expected to formally recognize the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act Monday evening with a proclamation affirming the city’s continued commitment to accessibility, equity and inclusion.

The proclamation, scheduled during the Council’s July 21 meeting, also celebrates Disability Pride Month and reflects Pasadena’s emphasis on disability rights, civic visibility and community engagement. City officials have promoted public participation with a coordinated outreach effort that includes streaming access via KPAS TV and pasadenamedia.org, as well as a social media campaign featuring the hashtag #ThanksToTheADA.

The meeting begins with a closed session at 5 p.m., followed by a public session at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers at Pasadena City Hall, located at 100 N. Garfield Ave.

Casey Jagusch, Chair of the city’s Accessibility and Disability Commission, stated, “This month as we celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, we recognize a transformative moment in our nation’s history… There is still much work to do to ensure true equity, inclusion, and opportunity for all.”

The proclamation follows Pasadena’s long-standing tradition of ADA recognition. In 2020, the City Council commemorated the law’s 30th anniversary with a similar proclamation. The ADA was signed into law by President George H.W. Bush on July 26, 1990, with July now recognized nationally as Disability Pride Month. This year’s theme, “We Belong Here, and We’re Here to Stay,” was selected by The Arc’s National Council of Self-Advocates.
