Los Angeles County planners are scheduled to gather Altadena residents’ ideas on the community’s zoning code and Eaton Fire rebuilding rules at a listening session Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Collaboratory.

The session is the second of three the county has scheduled in Altadena. It centers on land use and zoning, especially the Altadena Community Standards District and rebuilding after the fire. The meeting will look at potential updates and revisions to relevant zoning codes, according to the county’s Department of Regional Planning. Staff also plan to share information on existing or proposed Altadena-related programs and projects and to better understand community needs.

Because Altadena is unincorporated, Los Angeles County Planning serves as its planning department. The standards district is a supplemental set of zoning regulations within the county zoning code. It is meant to keep new and expanded structures and uses compatible in size and scale with surrounding neighborhoods.

The morning opens at 9:30 a.m. with coffee, snacks and information tables. From 10 to 10:50 a.m., county planning staff are to present the zoning regulations and land use policies that affect Altadena. The presentations are to cover the zoning code and design standards for specific types of development projects in Altadena. They are also to cover the county’s Disaster Recovery Ordinance, which the department describes as aimed at helping property owners rebuild.

That ordinance allows temporary housing and accessory structures on properties that held a legally established single-family residence, accessory dwelling unit, caretaker’s residence or farmworker dwelling unit. It also allows like-for-like replacement of buildings and structures damaged or destroyed by a disaster.

Facilitated small-group discussions and brainstorming follow from 11 to 11:50 a.m., when attendees can offer feedback and ideas on the zoning code, rebuilding regulations and land use policies. The session closes from noon to 12:30 p.m. with snacks, information tables and informal discussion.

The department asks people who plan to attend, or who need interpretation, to RSVP. Spanish, Mandarin and Cantonese interpretation will be available.

In an Oct. 16 newsletter to neighbors, Isis Moulden, a Census Tract 4610 member of the Altadena Town Council, wrote, “Bring your priorities for our neighborhoods and business corridors.”

The Collaboratory, which opened in October 2025, is the Eaton Fire Collaborative’s hub for survivors seeking recovery resources.

The first session in the series, on economic development, was scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 19. The third and final session, on infrastructure, is set for Saturday, Dec. 12.
