A preliminary hearing date will be scheduled Thursday for a man charged with attempted murder after allegedly throwing a woman onto train tracks and into freeway traffic in a violent attack at a Pasadena Metro station.
Juan Pablo Flores, 33, is set to appear at 8:30 a.m. in Department H of the Pasadena Courthouse, where prosecutors will schedule a hearing to determine if sufficient evidence exists to proceed to trial.
Flores faces charges of attempted murder and mayhem for the August 7 assault at the Allen Metro A Line station platform above North Allen Avenue. He has pleaded not guilty and remains held on $2 million bail.
According to authorities, Flores allegedly struck the woman without provocation around 5:30 a.m. on the platform. He reportedly punched her repeatedly, slammed her head against the platform and pushed her onto the train tracks.
Video footage showed Flores kicking and dragging the woman into oncoming traffic, at one point tossing her so close to the main lanes that she was almost hit by a passing vehicle. Police arrested Flores shortly after at 5:45 a.m. at the intersection of Allen Avenue and Villa Street.
The woman, whose identity was not released, suffered severe injuries including a broken nose, multiple cuts requiring staples and stitches, and potential long-term disfigurement. She has since been released from the hospital but requires family assistance to walk.
Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón condemned the attack. “No one should have to endure such brutality, and everyone deserves to go about their day without fear for their safety,” he said.
County Supervisors Kathryn Barger and Janice Hahn have called for increased security measures and a full investigation into the incident.
If convicted, Flores faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.
