Applications for the Pasadena Rental Housing Board close Monday at 5:30 p.m., city officials announced as they seek to fill multiple positions before current terms expire next month.

Helen Morales, director of the Rent Stabilization Department, urged qualified residents to submit applications before the April 21 deadline, for positions that will become vacant on May 24.

The Board, consisting of 7 tenant members, 4 at-large members and 2 alternates, enforces the city’s Fair and Equitable Housing Charter Amendment as outlined in Section 1811 of the City Charter.

Current vacancies include tenant member positions from Districts 3, 5 and 7, represented by Brandon Lamar, Yaneli Soriano Santiago and Deborah Dunlop, respectively. Two at-large member seats held by Allison Henry and Adela Torres are also open. All current members are eligible for reappointment.

Board responsibilities include setting allowable rent increases, determining the Annual General Adjustment, conducting hearings on rent adjustment petitions, enforcing compliance with Article XVIII, maintaining the city’s rental housing registry, and appointing hearing officers and adopting rules, regulations and an annual budget.

Applicants for tenant positions must not have owned, managed or held a 5% or greater ownership interest in rental properties in Los Angeles County within the past three years. This restriction extends to Extended Family members as well.

All candidates must gather at least 25 signatures from residents in their Council District. Applicants for tenant seats must also submit a public declaration of financial interests for themselves and their Extended Family members.

Tenant members are nominated by their District’s Councilmember and confirmed by the full City Council, while at-large members are selected by the entire City Council.

Board members can receive compensation for up to 20 hours of service weekly at 2.5 times Pasadena’s minimum wage.

Applications and nomination petition forms are available at the City Clerk’s Office, Room S228, at 100 North Garfield Avenue during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
