District 2 Councilmember Rick Cole Marks One Year in Current Office

As District 2 residents gather Saturday afternoon under the trees at McDonald Park, Pasadena’s north-central neighborhoods sit at the intersection of high-stakes debates over housing, homelessness and public safety.

The December 6 occasion: Rick Cole’s first anniversary celebration as councilmember. The event will run from 1 to 3 p.m.  at the 4.8-acre park at 1000 Mountain Street.

Cole, 72, took office Dec. 9, 2024, after winning 59.8% of the vote in a March primary against incumbent Felicia Williams. The former mayor’s return to city government came after a 30-year absence from the council.

In an announcement posted on the city’s District 2 website, Cole said he has reconnected with longtime residents through more than 1,000 door visits over the past year. He also cited neighborhood meetings, issue forums and community events, each experience “highlighting the pride, creativity, and optimism that define this community.”

The event promises community connection, music and reflection.

Cole’s first year coincides with significant transitions in city leadership. City Manager Miguel Márquez has announced retirement plans for 2025. The search for his replacement looms as a critical decision for the seven-member council.

The announcement referenced “collective progress made throughout District 2” and an ongoing “ONE PASADENA” initiative. Specific metrics for first-year achievements were not detailed in available materials.

Cole organized California’s first homeless count in 1993 while serving as mayor. He currently teaches courses on homelessness and city leadership at Pepperdine University.

Saturday’s event is open to District 2 residents and the broader Pasadena community. McDonald Park features basketball courts, pickleball facilities, a playground and picnic areas.
