The Don Bosco Technical Institute community has experienced a great loss in the passing of Brother Anthony Freitas on July 31. Bro. Tony faithfully fulfilled his vocation at Don Bosco Technical Institute for decades, positively impacting the lives of many students.
He had been active on the campus continually, apart from one year, since the school’s opening in 1955. For thirty-two years he was the chair of the school’s former Manufacturing Technology Department and shepherded it through the transition from conventional machines to tape-controlled equipment and finally to computerized machines. After retiring as department chair in 1987, he served as director of cooperative education at Bosco Tech, in charge of placing and monitoring fifth-year students in the workplace. Brother Tony, who was 94, served as Bosco Tech’s official archivist since 1988 and believed that the school has kept its strong Salesian identity because many of its lay teachers are graduates.
“The history of Bosco Tech would never be complete without a place of honor given to Brother Tony Freitas,†said Rev. Tim Ploch, Provincial of the Salesian’s USA West Province. “He is the paragon Techman, the original model!â€
The funeral Mass, rosary and visitation were all held on the Bosco Tech campus. Family, students, alumni and current and past instructors attended the services.
