The City of Pasadena will provide residents with a safe and convenient way to dispose of electronic waste and sensitive documents during a drive-through collection event on Saturday, June 7, at the Rose Bowl. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Brookside Park’s Parking Lot I, located at 360 N. Arroyo Blvd.

“Recycle your obsolete electronics! Safely dispose of common electronic waste such as TVs, computers, printers, household batteries, fluorescent bulbs and tubes, and more!” Pasadena Department of Public Works said in an announcement.

The one-day event offers two primary services. Residents can bring a wide range of electronic items for recycling, and the city also provides free on-site document shredding, with a limit of three legal size boxes or equivalent per resident. For document shredding, residents should remove papers from ring binders and bulldog/binder clips before arrival.

Proof of Pasadena residency is required for participation.

Event duration is subject to truck capacity, meaning services may end before 3 p.m. if collection vehicles reach capacity. The city reminds participants to erase sensitive data before recycling electronics.

Accepted electronics encompass most common household items. These include TVs and accessories, computers and accessories, accessory cables, DVD/VCR players, projectors, power strips/surge protectors, shredders, microwaves, small kitchen appliances, cell phones, CD players, digital cameras, electronic toys, household batteries (including rechargeable), fluorescent bulbs and tubes (please remove from lamps/metal housing), and high tech vacuums/vacuum robots.

However, certain items cannot be accepted. These include air conditioners, large printer/copiers, car batteries, solar panels, household hazardous wastes (paint, solvents, medical waste, sharps, mercury-containing devices such as thermostats, smoke detectors), water heaters, and white goods such as refrigerators, washers/dryers.

The Department of Public Works holds these one-day e-waste and document shredding events for residents throughout the year. Dates are scheduled according to space availability at the Rose Bowl. Residents who would like to subscribe for notifications of upcoming events can sign up through the City Service Center.

Additional recycling options exist year-round for those who cannot attend the June 7 event. Los Angeles County residents can visit S.A.F.E Collection Centers maintained by the City of Los Angeles for free household hazardous waste and e-waste disposal. Small businesses can also find information on their page about options for disposal.

Los Angeles County also hosts one-day events for household hazardous waste and e-waste, with a mobile event schedule available. These alternative locations are particularly useful for items not accepted at the Pasadena event, such as paint and solvents.

For document shredding alternatives, many office supply and shipping retail stores nationwide offer secure shredding services to individuals. The City of Pasadena cannot endorse any specific retail establishment and residents are encouraged to do research on the certifications and processes used at each location.

For more information about the June 7 event, residents can contact the Department of Public Works at 626-744-7311 or email recycle@cityofpasadena.net.

Additional details about accepted materials are available on the city’s website at CityOfPasadena.net/EWaste.
