Drivers Urged to Be Extra Cautious on National Walk and Roll to School Day

Students and families in Pasadena are encouraged to leave their cars behind and participate in National Walk and Roll to School Day on Wednesday, October 8, an annual event that promotes pedestrian safety and physical activity.

Coinciding with National Pedestrian Safety Month, the campaign highlights the importance of safe walking and biking routes for children commuting to school. The Pasadena Police Department said drivers should remain alert and exercise extra caution due to increased foot and bicycle traffic.

“In Pasadena, walking should always be an easy and safe option for getting around,” said Pasadena Police Department Lieutenant Anthony Russo, citing federal data showing a pedestrian is killed every 72 minutes and one is injured every eight minutes in the United States.

“National Walk and Roll to School Day is a great opportunity to highlight pedestrian safety and advocate for safer routes for walking and biking to school,” Russo said. “This day underscores the importance of boosting physical activity and prioritizes the safety of the families in our community.”

Drivers were reminded to slow down in school zones, watch for children crossing streets, and be prepared to stop for school buses.

The Pasadena Police Department offered safety tips for students walking, biking, or rolling to school:

• Use sidewalks or paths away from traffic. If unavailable, walk facing traffic or bike with traffic on the far right.
• Cross at stop signs, signals, or corners. Make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
• Watch for vehicles entering or exiting driveways.
• Always wear a helmet when riding or rolling.
• Wear bright or reflective clothing and use a flashlight in low light.
• Stay alert and avoid distractions from electronic devices.

The program is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
