Fire Department Launches Free NOAA Weather Alert Radio Program

The Pasadena Fire Department, in partnership with the Los Angeles County Office of Emergency Management, has begun distributing free National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Weather Alert Radios to help households stay informed during wildfires, earthquakes, and other disasters.

The program launched in June. Because the radios operate independently of local power, cellular networks, and internet service, they offer a resilient backup communication source when traditional infrastructure fails.

A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather radio is one of the most reliable tools for emergency preparedness. It provides a dedicated, 24/7 source of life-safety information, including instant alerts issued directly by the Los Angeles County Office of Emergency Management for hazards such as fast-moving wildfires, earthquakes, and severe weather.

Pasadena residents can sign up to receive a free radio by filling out an online form. Residents living in High Fire Hazard Severity Zones or areas with unreliable cell coverage and frequent power outages will be prioritized. Once registrations are processed, applicants will be assigned a specific date, time, and location to collect their radio.

Distribution is limited to one radio per household. Residents can submit a registration request through the city’s online form at cityofpasadena.net/fire/weather-radio/.
