The Pasadena City College women’s volleyball team saw its 4-match win streak that started the 2025 season end at the hands of host Los Angeles Mission in four sets on Saturday, 25-20, 27-25, 20-25, 25-22. The Lancers then learned Monday that they are ranked #11 in the first CCCWVCA State Top 25.
PCC (4-1 overall) split their two matches at the LA Mission Tri, sweeping Victor Valley, 25-13, 25-9, 25-20, prior to its defeat against the undefeated Eagles, who are ranked #6 after reaching the 3C2A state tourney last year.
Pasadena head coach Mike Terrill was upbeat despite the loss.
“It was a fun and exciting match to be a part of! A good battle on both sides,” he said. “LA Mission is a competitive team that plays hard and is well-coached. We didn’t quite keep up in the serve/pass game and they created and converted more swings than we did. Although we didn’t execute the way we wanted to at the end of tight sets, our team is committed to learn from this and get even stronger.”
In total points, PCC stayed close over the four sets only edged by five, 97-92.
Frosh outside hitter Bobbi Torres led the Lancers attack, scoring 18 kills and added 22 digs. Middle blocker Delaney Blied contributed 10 kills (hit .389) and made four blocks (two solos) while OH Payton Scott collected nine kills. Opposite Izzy Taylor had five kills and four blocks, setter Melissa Monterroza totaled 36 assists and 14 digs while libero Juyeon Lee made 11 digs and serverd three aces.
Tawny Ohrt led three LA Mission players in double figures in kills with 15 and MB Amya Cheatham January was dominating at the net, making 14 total blocks (seven solos).
Against Victor Valley, PCC played 16 players as Scott landed 10 kills (hit .333) with two aces, opposite Mahrie Bedjakian scored seven kills (.462), setter JanetMarie Reyes had 12 assists and placed three aces, Lee contributed 12 digs and five assists, frosh setter Julianna Wilson made her PCC debut and totaled 10 assists, six digs and an ace, Torres hit six kills, defensive specialist Jayleen Almaraz defended seven digs, and MB Savannah Curtis, MB Machijah Harville, and OH Sabiya Esquivel each scored three kills.
This week, the Lancers will be tested again playing at #14-ranked Moorpark on Wednesday, Sept. 3 before hosting the PCC Quad, facing #7 Santa Monica (11 a.m.) and #25 San Bernardino Valley (1:30 p.m.).
