Fuller to Co-Host Immigration and Deferred Action Discussion

Fuller Seminary is co-sponsoring a public event at Villa Parke Community Center in Pasadena on November 5th to discuss the new Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) federal policy.

DACA is a presidential order that allows young people who were brought into the U.S. as children to have their deportation deferred and receive permission to work for two years. To be eligible, applicants must have graduated from high school, be in school or have served in the U.S. military. DACA does not grant U.S. residency or a visa.

At the event, expert immigration lawyers will present the facts of the DACA policy, answer questions and provide individual consultations.

Fuller Seminary’s Dr. Lisseth Rojas-Flores, assistant professor of Marriage and Family Therapy, said, “This is a great opportunity for the immigrant community to be empowered with knowledge and professional guidance about their immigration rights. This event will be helpful to parents who want to learn more about DACA and the new possibilities that it opens for their teen and young adult children.”

Over 1.2 million immigrants are estimated to be eligible for DACA, and as many as 200,000 former Los Angeles Unified School District students may be eligible. A recent New York Times article told the story of Justino Mora, age 23 of Los Angeles, who was one of the first immigrants to receive a DACA approval after the policy was enacted on August 15, 2012. Mr. Mora stated that the approval will help him to receive financial aid to complete his education at the University of California, Los Angeles.

The event will take place in the Villa Parke Community Center auditorium, 363 E. Villa St., Pasadena from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. It is co-hosted by Villa Parke Community Center, Fuller Seminary, the Central American Resource Center, Lake Avenue Church and Lake Avenue Community Foundation.
