A Gofundme page has been started for a Pasadena police officer whose wife and daughter are battling cancer. Officer Saul Duran’s wife is battling breast cancer, while the couple’s daughter Cassidy has been diagnosed with a rare brain cancer called Medulloblastoma in July 2023.
Breast cancer accounts for nearly one-third of all cancer cases in women, and about 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer in their lifetime. Female breast cancer incidence rates “have been slowly increasing by about 0.5% per year since the mid-2000s, attributed at least in part to continued declines in the fertility rate and increases in excess body weight.”
When breast cancer is detected early, in the localized stage, the 5-year survival rate is 98%.
“Both Genny and Cassidy have been in and out of the hospital with no more than a few days between admissions,” according to the Gofundme page. “Regardless of their constant pain, they have always put on a brave face and smile everyday. Our uncle Saul is the sole provider of the family and with his daughter and wife battling cancer, the constant hospital admissions and appointments, and life-saving treatments that are not covered by insurance, it has been extremely difficult to keep up with all of the expenses that come along with it such as: gas getting to and from the hospital, medications that insurance doesn’t cover, and all of the food expenses since they are at the hospital unable to cook for themselves.”
So far more than $14,000 has been donated to the family.
Genny and Cassidy have received surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy in addition to other treatments respective to their different cancers.
The family gathered in Cassidy’s hospital room to watch the Dodgers’ successful battle to win the World Series.
According to KTLA, the family was ecstatic when Freddie Freeman hit his walk-off grand slam.
“You’re watching this and you’re not even thinking about the pain or the medical side of everything, you’re just watching and cheering,” Cassidy told KTLA.
