Victor Gordo on Thursday remembered former Mayor William E. Thomson Jr. as a “visionary leader” whose legacy shaped the city’s future, following news of Thomson’s death.

“Mayor Thomson was more than a public servant—he was a builder of community, a champion of progress, and a steward of Pasadena’s future,” Gordo said in a statement. “Pasadena is better because of Thomson, and his legacy will live on in every corner of our city.”

Thomson served as Pasadena’s mayor from 1988 to 1990 and spent 16 years on the City Council, including a term as vice mayor. He was widely credited with helping revitalize Old Pasadena into a vibrant business and arts district and with bringing international events such as four Super Bowls and the 1994 World Cup to the Rose Bowl.

Beyond City Hall, Thomson worked to expand educational opportunities through Pasadena City College and the Pathway Project, which helped open doors for students to pursue higher education.

Thomson is survived by his wife, Carol, their children and grandchildren. Funeral arrangements have not been announced.

“We remember him not only for his accomplishments, but for his integrity, humility, and unwavering belief in the power of public service. Pasadena is better because of Thomson, and his legacy will live on in every corner of our city—from the historic streets of Old Pasadena to the halls of learning and the fields of play.

“On behalf of the City of Pasadena, I extend our deepest condolences to his wife Carol, his children, grandchildren, and all who were touched by his life. We will honor his memory by continuing the work he began—with vision, compassion, and a steadfast commitment to community. Let us remember Mayor Thomson not only for what he built, but for how he inspired us to build together.”
