In the face of fearmongering, scapegoating, and brazen abuses of power, the Pasadena City Council has shown what true leadership looks like. Their firm declaration against President Donald Trump’s inflammatory and unlawful rhetoric — labeling Los Angeles an “invasion zone” and threatening federal immigration enforcement raids — is a beacon of courage, dignity, and resolve. In a time when cruelty is masquerading as policy and bullying has taken the place of governance, Pasadena has drawn a clear line: not in our city.
Let us be clear: Trump’s targeting of immigrants — whether undocumented or not — is not about law or order. It is about control. It is about stoking fear to consolidate power, using human beings as pawns in a cynical political game. When he turns his ire not only on immigrants but on the elected officials who protect them, it is not a difference of opinion — it is authoritarianism in motion. These tactics are not new. History has taught us what happens when fear and silence prevail. We must not let that happen here.
We are deeply grateful to our City Council for refusing to be cowed. Their public statement reaffirms that Pasadena will not assist with or participate in the enforcement of federal civil immigration laws. They have sent a powerful message to our immigrant neighbors — and to all of us — that we belong here, and that we are not alone.
But words must be matched with action.
Now is the time for all of us to rise. Speak up. Show up. Let our neighbors know they are not invisible, and let those in power know we are not afraid. Volunteer with local organizations that support immigrant families. Help register voters. Attend city council meetings. Organize peaceful protests. Talk to friends, neighbors, and family — especially those who may be wavering — about what is at stake. Democracy does not defend itself. We defend it — through our voices, our values, and our courage.
Trump’s vision for this country is one of fear and division. But ours is one of justice, inclusion, and solidarity. And today, we join with our City Council in drawing that line. We reject tyranny. We reject cruelty. And we embrace a future where dignity, compassion, and community carry the day.
We will get through this — together.
