The National Weather Service in Los Angeles/Oxnard has issued a Heat Advisory for parts of Los Angeles County, including the San Gabriel Valley, as a heatwave threatens to bring dangerously hot temperatures to the region this week.
The advisory, which takes effect from 11 a.m. Wednesday and extends through 6 p.m. Sunday, warns of unrelenting high temperatures.
“Hot temperatures may cause heat illnesses,” the National Weather Service cautioned in its urgent weather message issued early Tuesday morning.
The heatwave is expected to intensify as the week progresses, with forecasters predicting a large and warm upper high pressure system to move into the state from the west. By Thursday, temperatures in valleys and interior areas of Los Angeles County could soar to 10 to 15 degrees above normal.
Friday is anticipated to be the warmest day of the heatwave.
Adding to the discomfort, overnight lows are expected to remain uncomfortably warm.
The National Weather Service has issued several precautionary measures for residents in the affected areas. These include drinking plenty of fluids, staying in air-conditioned rooms, avoiding sun exposure, and checking on relatives and neighbors.
For those who must be outdoors, officials recommend wearing lightweight and loose-fitting clothing and limiting strenuous activities to early morning or evening hours. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration advises scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments for outdoor workers.
The prolonged nature of this heatwave is particularly concerning, with long-range forecasts suggesting that the high temperatures may persist well into next week. This extended period of extreme heat, combined with areas of low humidity, raises concerns about potential fire weather risks in the region.
