Holden Block Party Postponed as Pasadena Braces for Triple-Digit Heat

Chris Holden’s annual 26th Annual Community Resource Fair and Block Party, scheduled for Saturday, has been postponed as Pasadena prepares for a dangerous heat wave expected to push afternoon temperatures into triple digits.

“Due to extreme heat warnings, Chris Holden’s Annual Block Party, originally scheduled for Saturday, August 23rd, has been canceled,” Holden announced.

Holden said that the decision was made “out of an abundance of caution” due to a forecast of 100-degree weather. The event will be rescheduled for a future date.

The family-friendly event, hosted by former Assemblymember and Pasadena City Councilmember and now LA Fire Justice CEO Chris Holden, was set for 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the 500 block of East Jackson Street.

In past years, the block party has drawn crowds with live music, games, vendors, and information booths from local nonprofits and public agencies.

But forecasts show the city will be baking under clear skies and highs near 95 degrees by late afternoon, with the National Weather Service warning that “dangerously hot conditions” could reach as high as 110 degrees across the San Gabriel Valley. The warning runs from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, right through the planned hours of the event.

The sweltering forecast forced organizers to call off the celebration, citing the risk of heat-related illness for attendees and vendors alike. City officials have already been urging residents to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity, and use cooling centers where available.
