It might not have been the way Pasadena City College coach Tom Maher saw his first win since Week 8 in 2004 coming, but he’ll take it.
Maher was on the PCC sidelines after a 12-year absence, and the Lancers were riding a five-game losing streak dating back to last season.
But PCC got out to a 26-0 lead and held on, 26-11, Saturday night, in a nonconference contest with visiting San Bernardino Valley College.
All this despite having 194 yards of penalties and just 144 yards of total offense.
Enrique Lozano made field goals of 34 and 29 yards, respectively, for the Lancers (1-1).
Jacob Fimbres, a Sonora High star of a year ago, scored on a 16-yard TD run in the second quarter to give PCC a 17-0 lead.
The closest SBVC (0-2) would get was the final score.
But at least the Wolverines didn’t get skunked like they did in last week’s 40-0 blowout against state power Mt. San Antonio.
Francisco Gallegos had a 1-yard TD run up the middle in the second quarter, and Zephaniyah Sanford capped the Lancers scoring when he picked up a SBVC fumble and brought it back 78 yards for the score, and with about four blockers escorting him along the way.
The game lasted an astonishing three hours and forty minutes, thanks to a combined 40 penalties that accounted for 375 yards of backwards yardage.
Demetre Ramos-Davis had the only impressive stats on the night for either school.
The SBVC receiver caught 11 passes for 182 yards, and caught a 2-point pass after a fourth-quarter Wolverines TD.
“We made a lot of good plays and learned how to win,” Maher said. “We were able to capitalize on their mistakes and the win is a great confidence builder. We played an opponent that takes some gambles on defense and we tried to take advantage of that.”
It was the first meeting between the two schools in 25 years, and PCC now has a 16-3 advantage over the Wolverines in head-to-head match ups.
PCC will be back on the field when Allan Hancock College (0-2) comes to Pasadena next Saturday at 4 p.m.
