On Tuesday, Kathryn Barger began serving as Chair of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for the 2024-2025 term, announcing significant changes to increase accessibility. Barger represents Pasadena on the Board.
In a letter to colleagues, Barger said Board meetings will occur every Tuesday starting January 2025, scheduling 36 annual sessions.
The new Chair implemented immediate procedural changes, moving public commentary on undiscussed policy motions to the beginning of Board meetings rather than at the end.
“It’s an honor and privilege to lead the Board of Supervisors as we continue to tackle the critical issues facing our County,” Barger said. “None of us know exactly what this next year will hold. But, here’s what I will say with certainty: the County of Los Angeles remains a strong and stable safety net for our communities.”
The incoming Chair, who received the Peace Officers Association of Los Angeles County’s President’s Award this year, outlined priorities focusing on public safety and unity.
Her agenda encompasses support for law enforcement agencies, assistance for homeless individuals and foster youth, and investments in health and mental health systems.
“To my colleagues, I promise I will serve this Board with a steady hand,” Barger stated, addressing fellow Supervisors directly about collaboration and diverse perspectives.
“County government is not about politics, it’s about people,” Barger emphasized, emphasizing that County Supervisors’ names appear on ballots without party affiliations.
“Los Angeles County will continue to stand as a beacon of hope, a safe harbor for our residents when they need us most,” she continued.
The new Chair brings more than 30 years of experience in Los Angeles County government, having dedicated her entire career to County service.
