Keck Medicine of USC Opens New Office Operations in Pasadena

Nine months after cutting the ribbon on a 100,000-square-foot outpatient center on Fair Oaks Avenue, Keck Medicine of USC has opened a business operations office at The Walnut Plaza in Pasadena’s Civic Center district — giving the university health system three addresses in the city.

The Walnut Plaza office, at 215 North Marengo Avenue, is not a place patients will visit. It houses the administrative and operational teams that support patient services, healthcare operations, and the evolving needs of the health system, according to a Keck Medicine statement. Together with the clinical facility on Fair Oaks Avenue, the two Pasadena locations “strengthen the health system’s clinical and operational presence in the city while expanding access to high-quality, patient-centered care across the San Gabriel Valley,” the health system said.

Keck Medicine — one of only two university-based health systems in the Los Angeles area — now operates two clinical facilities and one operations hub in Pasadena.

The clinical anchor is the four-story medical office building at 590 South Fair Oaks Avenue, which Keck Medicine describes as its largest and most advanced outpatient location. The facility, which took approximately three years to build, more than doubles the health system’s capacity to deliver care in Pasadena. Since opening on October 3, 2025, it has offered more than 15 specialties under one roof, including oncology and infusion therapy through USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, cardiovascular care through the USC Cardiac and Vascular Institute, orthopedics and spine care through the team that provides medical services for USC Athletics and the LA Kings, diagnostic imaging and laboratory services, pain management, neurology, and an ambulatory surgery center. The building is pursuing LEED Platinum certification, which would make it the second USC-built project to earn that designation.

“From when we first envisioned this project, our mission was to provide comprehensive care for the many patients, alumni, staff and residents who live and work in Pasadena and the surrounding San Gabriel Valley area,” Rod Hanners, CEO of Keck Medicine, said at the building’s ribbon-cutting ceremony last October.

Keck Medicine also continues to operate its existing 18,000-square-foot clinic at 625 South Fair Oaks Avenue, which focuses on memory and brain health, brain health and aging, bariatric medicine and clinical nutrition, endocrinology, gastroenterology, comprehensive ophthalmology through the USC Roski Eye Institute, primary and family care including geriatric services, and dermatology.

The Pasadena footprint is part of a broader eastward push. Keck Medicine opened a 33,000-square-foot multispecialty clinic at 125 West Huntington Drive in Arcadia in December 2018. In July 2022, Methodist Hospital of Southern California in Arcadia joined Keck Medicine and was renamed USC Arcadia Hospital, a 348-licensed-bed community facility. The California Attorney General required Keck Medicine to invest $200.7 million in the hospital’s infrastructure as a condition of the affiliation. Shawn Sheffield, Keck Medicine’s chief strategy officer, outlined the trajectory in a 2022 LinkedIn essay, describing a vision of expanding along the “210 corridor” from Pasadena through Arcadia, into Pomona Valley, and eventually into San Bernardino and Riverside Counties.

Keck Medicine encompasses four hospitals — Keck Hospital of USC, a 343-bed acute care hospital; USC Norris Cancer Hospital, a 60-bed facility; USC Verdugo Hills Hospital; and USC Arcadia Hospital — along with what the health system describes as more than 100 clinics across Southern and Central California. Keck Medical Center of USC is ranked among the top 50 hospitals nationally in seven specialties, 10th in California, and fifth in the Los Angeles metro area, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2025–26 Best Hospitals rankings.
