Kidspace United Workers Ask Museum to Recognize Union

Kidspace United Workers wants the museum to voluntarily recognize its union.

The approximately 60 workers would be the first unionized children’s museum in Los Angeles County, and a strong majority of workers have already signed union authorization cards, according to a statement released on Wednesday.

“I believe that employees have the right to organize and collectively bargain for the betterment of their work conditions,” said {USD Board Member Patrice Marshall McKenzie who was scheduled to attend a press conference on Wednesday at the museum.
“Organized labor has been an engine that fueled the growth of good paying jobs that provide employees with livable wages, good health and welfare benefits, and safe working conditions. I stand with the Kidspace employees who want to exercise their right to organize.”

According to that statement, voluntary recognition would avoid a lengthy and costly election process through the National Labor Relations Board.

Academy Museum, Academy Foundation, and Museum of Contemporary Art employers in Los Angeles who all agreed to voluntarily recognize their employee’s unions.

The group was scheduled to hold a press release on Wednesday.

Kidspace Children’s Museum is located in the Arroyo Seco and offers experiences for children aged 1-10. Situated on a 3.5-acre campus near the historic Rose Bowl, the museum features over 40 hands-on exhibits designed to spark exploration and imaginative play.
