Lake Avenue Church: Why Are You Doing This?

Another Intergenerational Worship Service, really? We are starting to gather more often across the generations as a church family. You may be thinking, “why are we doing this?” While I could write a book about why this is important (and many have been), I think it boils down to: we need one another to follow Jesus.

We have forgotten this in recent years because of our well intentioned ministry philosophy to gather mostly by age. Yet, we read in the Scriptures that we need one another and have a responsibility to be with one another for our own spiritual growth. Psalm 78:4 says, “we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power, and the wonders he has done”. The older generation was instructed to convey the message of God to the younger generation. This goes both ways because Jesus says in Mark 10:15 , “I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the Kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it”. There is also a role for our younger family members to play in our older family members’ lives. As much as we are to teach them; they also teach us! We need one another as we pursue Christ.

We cannot teach one another if we don’t know one another. We can’t know one another if we are not around one another. This is why we gather like we are this weekend. We feel God is leading us to be around each other more often, to worship in song together, to fellowship together, and to hear God’s Word together. My prayer is that as we break routine this morning, that each of us will sense and experience God in a new and powerful way as we gather intergenerationally.
