The Jet Propulsion Laboratory confirmed Monday that layoffs are expected this month, though the number of affected employees remains unknown, according to the Pasadena Star-News.

Multiple sources, including Rep. Judy Chu, D-Pasadena, and JPL itself, acknowledged to reporter Steve Scauzillo that staff reductions are imminent. However, both strongly disputed online claims suggesting thousands of dismissals. JPL stated the figure was “vastly incorrect and lacks attribution.”

Chu echoed that sentiment in an interview with Scauzillo on Monday, saying the reported number was inaccurate.

“All I know is it is correct that they said layoffs would be in October,” she said, citing Caltech lobbyists in Washington, D.C.

JPL, managed by Caltech and operated under NASA, has faced repeated budgetary pressures in recent years. The latest round of cuts follows actions by the Trump Administration to reduce NASA’s funding and eliminate research grants. The proposed 2026 budget reportedly includes a nearly 25% reduction.
