Lessen Chances of Identity Theft with Free Shredding at City-Sponsored Electronics Recycling Event

Got old bank statements gathering dust? Obsolete computers storing personal data? Pasadena residents can help protect themselves from identity theft while clearing out electronic clutter at a free city recycling event Saturday, August 23, offering both paper shredding and safe disposal of everything from ancient VCRs to dead batteries.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Parking Lot I outside the Rose Bowl Stadium near Brookside Park, 360 North Arroyo Blvd. The line closes at 2 p.m. to process remaining customers, and the event may end earlier if trucks reach capacity.

Residents can bring up to three legal-size boxes of sensitive documents for shredding, including receipts, checks, pre-approved credit applications, credit card statements, outdated tax returns, pre-printed envelopes, return address labels and business cards. Documents should be removed from ring binders and bulldog clips.

Pasadena’s Public Works Department will accept computers, keyboards, printers, monitors, laptops, docking stations, scanners, shredders, fax machines, computer mice, telephones, televisions, flat screens, VCRs, DVD players, PDAs, cassette players, tape drives, and stereos. Household batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, and LED light bulbs are also accepted.

These items should never be disposed of in regular trash or recycling containers.

The event is open to Pasadena residents only and is sponsored by the City’s Department of Public Works. For more information, call (626) 744-7311 or email recycle@cityofpasadena.net.
