Three Beavers from Caltech Swim & Dive received Scholar All-America honors on Wednesday, the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) announced.
First-year Marcel Liu (Natick, Mass. / Phillips Academy) and sophomore Simon Hu (Clarksville, Md. / River Hill) of the men’s team along with sophomore Jana Woo (Saratoga, Calif. / Monta Vista) of the women’s squad each received Second Team distinction. The three student-athletes collected the recognition for attaining a GPA of at least 3.5 while either meeting a “B” time standard for the national championship (Liu, Hu) or qualifying for a diving zone qualification meet (Woo).
Liu achieved the B-cut in the 100-yard butterfly at the SCIAC Championships, tapping the wall at 48.73 seconds in the preliminaries to get below the standard and break the school record in the process. The rookie went on to place third in the finals, earning him All-SCIAC honors.
Hu also achieved the B-standard at the SCIAC Champs as he swam a lightning 1:39.65 in the 200-yard freestyle. The sophomore’s time just missed out on the bronze medal; he sits at No. 3 all-time in program history for the event.
Woo collected the honor by qualifying for the NCAA Regional Diving Championships, where she placed seventh out of 22 competitors in the 3-meter dive with a score of 366.85. The star also qualified for the 1-meter dive, where she finished 11th out of 28 divers with a score 360.95. The Saratoga native collected All-SCIAC distinction after winning the 3-meter title at the SCIAC Championships; she was named Co-Athlete of the Year at the Caltech Student-Athlete Celebration.
Last month, both the men’s and women’s swim & dive teams collected Spring Scholar All-America team honors; the two groups led the nation in GPA across all divisions.
