The City will overhaul the aging playground at Brenner Park under a proposed construction contract worth just over $1 million.

The City Council authorized a contract with Micon Construction, Inc. for an amount not to exceed $1,037,398 for the Brenner Park Playground project.

“This investment in Brenner Park is about giving families in our district a safe, modern, and welcoming place to play,” said District 3 Councilmember Justin Jones, who represents the district where the park is located.

“By replacing the equipment and installing a new rubberized, ADA-compliant surface, we’re making sure kids of all abilities can enjoy a high-quality play space that matches what families see at other recently improved parks across Pasadena. This is exactly the kind of neighborhood-level improvement residents expect and deserve.”

The agreement includes a base contract of $864,498 and a 20% contingency of $172,900 to cover potential change orders tied to unforeseen site conditions such as undocumented utilities, drainage issues, additional demolition or field design adjustments for play equipment installation.

Brenner Park, located at 235 Barthe Drive, spans about two acres and features a baseball field used primarily for tee-ball, along with a basketball court, tennis court and a playground installed in 2009 on the lower west side of the site.

City staff said the climbing-themed playground equipment has become outdated and is now rarely used.

To plan the upgrade, the city held two public meetings to gather input on replacing the playground.

Residents strongly supported moving the play area to the upper east section of the park, where visibility, accessibility and year-round usability are expected to improve.

That feedback shaped the new design, which calls for a modernized playground in the preferred location.

A Notice Inviting Bids was published Oct. 6 and posted on the city’s OpenGov procurement platform. A total of 86 vendors downloaded the bid package, including one local firm, and 18 bids were submitted.

One bidder later withdrew and another was deemed non-responsive for lack of sufficient project experience.

Micon Construction, based in Placentia, submitted the lowest responsible bid at $864,498, roughly 18% below the city engineer’s estimate of $1,062,000.

Total fiscal impact for the project, including construction administration, materials testing and inspection, is $1,117,898, to be funded through the Brenner Park Playground Improvements capital project.

Construction is expected to begin in spring 2026 and be completed by summer 2026.
