Pasadena Unified School District art students explored new creative horizons this summer through various arts programs and partnerships. The annual “No Boundaries” art exhibition and related summer activities connected Rose City High School students with professional artists and institutions to foster their artistic growth and career development.

“This summer, Rose City High School art students participated in a mentorship program at Artworx LA and Creative Wellbeing,” the program organizers reported. “Working on PUSD’s annual ‘No Boundaries’ art exhibition sparked their interest in careers in the arts, and teaching artists from Artworx LA and mentorships made a big impact, giving them insight and guidance on the next steps in their career paths.”

The summer programs offered students a range of opportunities tailored to their interests and talents. Violette received a scholarship from the Armory to take classes from this summer until next April, with no limits on the number of courses. Johnny learned character design at ArtCenter College of Design, producing original artwork. Vivian completed a Procreate Design course at ArtCenter College of Design, a special program developed in partnership for the summer. She received an iPad and Apple Pencil upon completion and her work was shown in front of Artworx LA students and in galleries. Milana overcame challenges to finish Otis College of Art and Design’s Summer of Art program, with photos showing her with her artwork at the culminating exhibition.

The District offers weekly visual arts classes taught by certified specialists in elementary schools, visual arts electives with certified teachers in middle schools, and a variety of visual arts courses at the high school level.

The “No Boundaries” exhibition, a long-standing tradition now in its 17th year, showcases student artwork from all 24 District schools in a public setting. It features diverse themes including identity, nature, culture, cartoons, portraits, and more recently, Dia de Los Muertos artwork and doodles.

This collaborative approach to arts education extends beyond the classroom. The City of Pasadena maintains a Student Art Wall as part of its Public Art Collection, featuring selected works from the “No Boundaries” exhibit. This initiative provides students with real-world experience in professional art presentation and community engagement.
