In an expansive holiday message to residents, Pasadena Mayor Victor M. Gordo outlined what he called an “extraordinary” year of civic achievements, from the successful passage of a measure to restore the historic Central Library to major strides in economic development and community infrastructure.

The annual end-of-year letter, which touches on both completed projects and ongoing initiatives, emphasizes the City’s commitment to balancing preservation with innovation, particularly highlighting the transformation of the SR-710 corridor and the attraction of new technology companies.

Beyond civic accomplishments, the Mayor’s message strikes a notably inclusive tone, acknowledging multiple holiday traditions while encouraging continued community engagement as the City enters 2025.

Below is Mayor Gordo’s statement in full:

Dear Neighbors and Friends:

I hope this message finds you and your loved ones well, healthy, and safe.

As 2024 comes to a close, many of us look forward to restful and joyful holidays with our family and friends. This time of year also offers us an opportunity to reflect on all that we’ve accomplished together over the past year.

This year has been extraordinary for Pasadena, marked by significant milestones that reflect the City’s commitment to community engagement, progress, and sustainability.

Grand Opening of the Washington Park Community House

On January 13, the City celebrated the grand opening of the Washington Park Community House. Designed as a vibrant hub for residents, the new facility offers multipurpose spaces for classes, events, and gatherings. With environmentally sustainable features, it embodies Pasadena’s dedication to creating inclusive spaces that strengthen community ties and support diverse programs for residents of all ages.

SR-710 Reconnecting Pasadena Master Plan

A transformative project, the SR-710 Reconnecting Pasadena Master Plan has taken center stage in 2024. The initiative reimagines the SR-710 stub area as a vibrant urban space, fostering community connectivity and sustainable growth. Throughout the year, the City and the SR-710 Reconnecting Communities Working Group hosted public workshops and forums, gathering input from residents and stakeholders. An oral history component was also launched to document the stories of those displaced by the SR-710 Freeway construction, preserving their voices as part of this historic project.

Federal Funding for the Sunset Complex Groundwater Treatment Facility

In June, Pasadena celebrated securing nearly $1 million in federal funding through Congresswoman Judy Chu’s Community Project Funding program. These funds will advance the Sunset Complex Groundwater Treatment Facility, enhancing the city’s water delivery system with improved reliability and resilience through facility construction, well upgrades, and reservoir replacements.

Grand Opening of the Viña Vieja Park Pickleball Courts

August marked the unveiling of the Viña Vieja Park Pickleball Courts, a new addition designed with accessibility in mind. These adaptive courts feature enhanced fencing, benches, landscaping, and expanded parking, demonstrating Pasadena’s commitment to inclusive recreational spaces.

Economic Development Strategic Plan

The City unveiled a forward-looking Economic Development Strategic Plan, positioning Pasadena as a hub for innovation in life sciences, artificial intelligence, and quantum technologies. This plan builds on Pasadena’s strengths, including its robust tech workforce and renowned institutions like Caltech. Notably, Xencor Inc. relocated to the city, and Motiv Space Systems announced plans for expansion, further solidifying Pasadena’s reputation in high-growth industries. Pasadena’s unique blend of historic charm and modern luxury continues to attract visitors and residents, as highlighted in Vogue and The New York Times.

Arroyo Seco Trail Improvements

In partnership with the One Arroyo Foundation, the City celebrated the completion of trail improvements in the Arroyo Seco. These enhancements preserve the area’s natural beauty while improving safety and accessibility, ensuring the Arroyo Seco remains a treasured resource for generations.

Measure PL: A Victory for the Central Library

On November 5, Pasadena voters overwhelmingly approved Measure PL, securing funding for the earthquake retrofit and repairs needed to reopen the historic Central Library. This landmark represents the heart of the community, offering immense educational, cultural, and historical value. The measure reflects residents’ commitment to preserving and enhancing this cherished institution for future generations.

These accomplishments are just a few examples of what we achieved together in 2024. From improving infrastructure and enhancing public spaces to fostering economic growth and preserving cherished institutions, Pasadena continues to shine as a city that honors its history while building a brighter future. Together, we celebrate the progress made this year, it is a testament to our collective strength and commitment.

As we prepare to welcome 2025, let’s continue building on this momentum, working together to create a brighter future for all of Pasadena.

Let us also remember the values that bind us as a community—kindness, compassion, and understanding. Let us honor the memory of the special people that our families and community have lost and cherish the moments we share with those who mean the most.

Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or another tradition, my family and I send you our warmest wishes for a happy holiday season filled with joy, peace, and love.

As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to me with your concerns, questions, or suggestions.

Sincerely,

Mayor Victor M. Gordo
