For the sixth straight year, a Pasadena City College women’s runner accomplished a spot on the 14-person, All-South Coast Conference Team on Friday. Sophomore Ashley Medina ran a time of 19 minutes, 23.7 seconds over a 5-kilometer course to take 10th overall during the SCC Championships meet hosted by PCC at Hahamongna Water Shed Park in La Canada Flintridge.
The Lancers tied for fifth overall in the team standings with East Los Angeles with 121 points each, but for postseason purposes PCC won the official tiebreaker on head-to-head comparisons to be seeded ahead of ELAC. Mt. San Antonio won the team title while East LA’s Laura Aceves, the defending CCCAA state individual champion, won her second consecutive South Coast crown at 17:52.7.
Sophomore Edna Bailon followed Medina for second among Lancers runners with a 17th place showing (19:54.8) while Tansica Sunkamaneevongse, an All-SCC runner last year, couldn’t duplicate that performance as she took 28th (20:24). Kate Manzke placed 32nd at 20:34.9 and Marina Flores was 45th (22:10.6). Sixty-three runners from eight colleges took part in the SCC finals.
“Ashley and Edna have both been running extremely well and they continued to improve with their SCC run,” said PCC head coach and meet director Armand Crespo. “I felt we did a good job of hosting the event, and proud that PCC did its conference duty as host this year. I think the course was challenging and the conditions were excellent.”
GUZMAN BRIGHTSPOT AT SCC FINALS
In the 4-mile, SCC Championships race, freshman Nathan Guzman placed 18th overall (21:40.8) for the top PCC finish. The Lancers finished a disappointing seventh place as a team. After Guzman, no Pasadena runner placed in the top half of the field of 66 racers.
After Guzman, Emilio Barragan-Steimer ran 23:26.6 (40th). In a pack, Russell Yu (23:52.1, 42nd), Pedro Lopez (23:54.2, 43rd) and Eric Bravo (23:54.4, 44th) crossed the finish line. Celso Martinez (24:40.5) rounded out the Lancers in 57th.
It’s been a tough period for the men’s program as the Lancers have not finished as high as fourth at any SCC Championships since 2004.
Mt. San Antonio won the men’s team championship while El Camino’s Teddy Kassa won the individual crown at 20:32.
