Mini Heat Wave to Drive Temperatures Well Above Normal by Friday

Temperatures will climb across the Southland Thursday and Friday thanks to a building high pressure system that should leave the area with above-normal temperatures heading into the weekend.

Hot conditions are expected to peak on Friday, when parts of the Southland could top triple-digits, with temperatures 10 or more degrees above normal, according to the National Weather Service.

In general, many areas could see temperatures of 8 to 16 degrees above normal on Friday, with highs approaching 100 in the valleys, lower mountains and deserts, according to the NWS.

The weather will start too cool on Saturday, with temperatures falling between 2 and 8 degrees, but some coastal areas may see little change in temperatures.

As a low pressure system moves in, however, there will be a chance of some showers, including possible thunderstorms in areas south of Point Conception, most likely in the San Gabriel Mountains, according to the NWS.

Temperatures are expected to cool each day from Sunday through Wednesday, dropping temperatures to 5 to 10 degrees below normal. But another warming trend is anticipated by mid-week.

Saturday: A 20 percent chance of showers after 11:00 a.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 89. Calm wind becoming south southwest around 5 mph in the afternoon.

Saturday Night: A 20 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 68. Southwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Sunday: A 20 percent chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 82. Light south wind becoming south southwest 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon.

Monday: Partly sunny, with a high near 77.
