City officials announced a series of overnight street closures to accommodate construction work for a new USC Keck medical building in West Pasadena.

Kris Markarian, Acting Director of Public Works, said the closures are necessary for the installation of new sewer service lines at 590 South Fair Oaks Avenue.

One sewer lateral will be installed on Fair Oaks Avenue and another on California Boulevard.

The project will involve two separate closures, each taking approximately one week. Both closures will be in effect nightly from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Fair Oaks Avenue will be closed from Palmetto Drive to Congress Street from Monday, Aug. 19 to Saturday, Aug. 24, 2024. This closure will not allow access to through traffic.

California Boulevard will be closed from Fair Oaks Avenue to Raymond Avenue from Monday, Aug. 26 to Saturday, Aug. 31, 2024.

“Construction work and associated closures will only occur overnight on weekdays from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.,” officials stated.

Flaggers will be stationed on California Boulevard to allow access to one emergency lane on the north side of the street.

The public sidewalk on the west side of Fair Oaks Avenue and the north side of California Boulevard will remain open during the closures, according to city officials.

Access to Edmondson Alley and the Burger King Restaurant on Fair Oaks Avenue will be maintained “through 11:00 p.m. each night,” the announcement specified.

City officials reported that “all properties affected by the closures along Fair Oaks Avenue and California Boulevard have been notified, including Huntington Hospital.”

The existing bus stops on Fair Oaks from Palmetto Drive to Congress Street will be temporarily closed during overnight work hours.

Detour routes have been established for both closures. For the Fair Oaks Avenue closure, vehicles can use St John Avenue, Pasadena Avenue, Raymond Avenue, Bellefontaine Street, Fillmore Street, and Del Mar Boulevard.

For the California Boulevard closure, which will not allow access to through traffic, detour routes include Bellevue Drive, Fillmore Street, Fair Oaks Avenue, and Raymond Avenue.

The city has coordinated these closures with affected transit agencies. Contractor’s Construction Notices have been sent to affected businesses and residents.
