Pasadena is expected to experience a significant and prolonged heat wave beginning Friday, with temperatures climbing to triple digits over the weekend and remaining well above normal into next week, according to the National Weather Service.
The warming trend begins gradually, with sunny skies and a high near 88 degrees on Wednesday. Temperatures are forecast to rise to about 93 degrees Thursday before reaching 97 degrees Friday.
The hottest conditions are expected Saturday, when Pasadena is forecast to reach 101 degrees. High temperatures are then expected to remain near 98 degrees Sunday and Monday and around 97 degrees Tuesday.
The National Weather Service said a strong area of high pressure developing over California will drive the extended period of hot weather. The agency described the event as a major and long-lasting heat wave that is expected to continue through next week and potentially beyond.
Nighttime temperatures also are forecast to increase significantly during the heat event. Lows are expected to rise from 56 degrees Wednesday night and 61 degrees Thursday night to around 70 to 72 degrees from Friday night through early next week.
Forecasters warned that the combination of prolonged daytime heat and warmer overnight temperatures could limit relief for residents, particularly those without air conditioning.
The forecast calls for mostly sunny to sunny conditions throughout the period, with no significant cooling expected after the weekend. While temperatures may ease slightly after Saturday’s peak, they are forecast to remain well above seasonal averages.
Residents are advised to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day and check on vulnerable family members, neighbours and pets as temperatures continue to rise.
