Pasadena City College Marks 100 Years with Ozomatli and Cultural Festivities on Saturday

Pasadena City College will celebrate its centennial on Saturday with a free public event featuring the Grammy-winning band Ozomatli, reflecting the institution’s century-long commitment to cultural diversity.

The festivities, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at PCC’s Colorado Campus, promise a day of entertainment ranging from acclaimed artists to local cultural ensembles. Ozomatli, the Los Angeles-based band known for its blend of Latin, hip-hop, and rock music, will headline the event. The group includes Raul Pacheco, a Pasadena City College alumnus.

“Since we opened our doors 100 years ago, PCC has been a place where cultures come together and are celebrated,” said Dr. José A. Gómez, the college’s Superintendent/President.

The day’s lineup features performances that span a multitude of cultural traditions. Mariachi Arco Iris de Los Angeles will offer mariachi music, Dramane Koné will lead an African drumming ensemble, and Lilia Dance Studio’s Armenian cultural group will perform traditional dances. The college’s own Choral Arts and the Lancer Marching Band will also showcase their talents.

At 1:30 p.m., the Lancer Marching Band will lead attendees in a rendition of “Happy Birthday” to commemorate the college’s 100th year. Following the musical tribute, guests will be treated to complimentary cupcakes provided by Dot’s Cupcakes of Pasadena.

A variety of food trucks will be on site, including Kogi BBQ, Fat Boys, Dina’s Dumplings, and La Michoacana, offering an array of culinary options. Family-friendly activities such as backyard games and a custom-built piñata will add to the celebratory atmosphere.

The event is expected to draw local political figures, among them Representative Judy Chu, Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, State Senator Anthony Portantino, and Assembly members Chris Holden and Mike Fong. Local mayors and council members will also join in honoring the college’s milestone.

Academic departments and offices will provide demonstrations and information booths throughout the event, offering insights into the college’s wide array of educational programs. According to the college’s website, these presentations aim to highlight PCC’s impact on the community over the past century.

On-campus parking is available for a nominal fee of $2, ensuring accessibility for all attendees.

Founded in 1924, Pasadena City College has been a cornerstone of higher education in the West San Gabriel Valley for a century. Serving over 26,000 students, the college offers a diverse range of degree and certificate programs. Its academic excellence has been recognized by the Aspen Institute, which has named it a Top Ten Community College three times. The institution also prides itself on a strong record of facilitating student transfers to University of California and California State University campuses.
