The Pasadena Conservatory of Music (PCM) said it is nearing its goal of raising up to $11 million for a campus expansion and progam enhancing project which, its Director said Tuesday, is now slated to get underway in Fall.
Through the project, called Common Ground, the Conservatory will create new classrooms and performance spaces, a new Amphitheater, and a bridge connecting the main building to a new Learning Center at its grounds at 100 Hill Ave. in Pasadena.
Common Ground also aims to expand PCM’s programming to include music traditions from around the world, music technology, adult studies, young musicians, and intergenerational activities.
“Our Common Ground campaign is fundamental to our strategic plan, our diversity, equity and inclusion plan, and our long-range campus development plan,” Stephen McCurry, PCM’s executive director, said. “Common Ground advances PCM’s mission and is emblematic of our institutional response to the evolving issues of our times.”
The campaign has already raised $8.4 million from donors and supporters, he said.
McCurry said the project will break ground and begin construction in September. The Conservatory hopes to complete all improvements and program enhancements by the Fall 2024 when it celebrates its 40th anniversary.
“Common Ground will create common spaces that re-imagine how different generations with diverse cultural backgrounds can learn and grow together,” June Li, a PCM board member, said.
A video posted on PCM’s YouTube channel shows the Learning Center on the first floor will house six purpose-built classrooms and six studios tailored to specific programs. These spaces will accommodate young musicians, ensembles, and New World music programs, according to plans.
The second floor of the main building will house teaching studios, individual instruction spaces, ensemble classrooms, and a music technology lab to facilitate music technology proficiency.
A balcony and walkway on the second floor will connect to the main building and overlook the Amphitheater, which will be “the heart of our school,” PCM says, and according to plans will provide seating for approximately 100.
PCM is a nonprofit organization that provides music education and performance opportunities for students of all ages and backgrounds. It serves more than 1,500 students annually and hosts more than 300 events each year.
