Councilmember-elect Rick Cole has announced a public forum to address the City’s approach to climate change, scheduled for Aug. 20.
The event, titled “How Will Pasadena Deal With a Changing Climate?” will feature a panel of experts moderated by Cole.
Scheduled panelists include Cynthia Cannady, chair of the Pasadena 100 Coalition, and Jason Lyon, a current Pasadena City Councilmember. Marta Segura, Chief Heat Officer for the City of Los Angeles, and Audrey Ma, a recipient of the President’s Environmental Youth Award, will also participate.
“Climate change is one of a handful of pressing issues that represent a real and immediate threat to our city,” Lyon said. He pointed to the importance of local action, citing initiatives like expanding urban forests, reducing fossil fuel usage, and preserving native habitats.
In an announcement, Cole referred to “the effects of a hotter and drier future.”
“We can’t solve global climate change in 25 square miles, but we must do our part to mitigate the climate emergency,” Cole added. He highlighted potential actions such as tree planting, shifting to renewable energy, and replenishing groundwater supplies.
The forum comes as part of a monthly series organized by Cole, covering various issues facing Pasadena. The forums are planned for the third Tuesday of each month. Previous topics have included affordable housing, future water supply, and public safety.
The event will take place at the Lineage Performing Arts Center, 920 E. Mountain Street, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Cole, who takes office in December, said he aims to engage residents in shaping the city’s future through these discussions.
“The goal of these forums is to discuss and debate our priorities, airing the best ideas with the goal of not only informing residents, but mobilizing them to take an active part in making a safer, greener and more affordable city,” Cole explained.
