City Extends Deadline for SR-710 Stub Historical Documentation Project Proposals

The City of Pasadena has extended the deadline for proposals for a historical documentation project about the SR-710 North “stub” area in West Pasadena to July 14.

The project will focus on the impact of the SR 710 North construction project on the West Pasadena community decades ago, including the displacement of residents and businesses. The “request for proposal” was issued in early June.

Constructed in the early 1970s, the State Route 710 North “stub” — the big freeway ditch in West Pasadena  —was originally intended to be part of a larger freeway system that would traverse the communities of El Sereno, South Pasadena, and Pasadena, completing the Long Beach Freeway.

The plan never materialized.

After being transferred back to the City of Pasadena last August, City officials and an advisory group are now planning the “stub’s” future.

The City Council created the Reconnecting Communities 710 Advisory Group (RC 710 Advisory Group) to provide input on the vision, land use, transportation network, infrastructure, economics, and restorative justice lens through which key policy topics may be evaluated.

Among the first steps is gaining an accurate understanding of the 50-acre site’s history because about 4,000 local residents were displaced and 1,500 homes were destroyed to make way for the freeway.

The City of Pasadena is seeking to document the displacement of the community that was formerly located within the relinquished area – and to the extent feasible, surrounding areas.

“The city seeks to understand the impacts that freeway expansion has had on all sectors of our community,” according to a City statement.

This webpage contains information regarding current and past agendas and will be continuously updated to provide updated and relevant data, information, and content, according to the City.
