The two-day closure overlaps a nine-day period in which the library’s online catalog and patron accounts are in view-only mode while the system is replaced. Through Sept. 9, patrons cannot renew items, place holds, register for a card or change account information online.
The City of Pasadena announced the closures in a news release issued Sept. 1. City Hall and many city services close Monday, Sept. 7. Pasadena Police and Fire will continue to be staffed for all patrol, jail, fire, paramedic and other emergency services, and life-threatening emergencies should be reported by dialing 9-1-1.
For most locations the Sunday date changes nothing. Nine of the ten open locations are already closed on Sundays. The exception is the Hastings Branch at 3325 E. Orange Grove Blvd., which normally opens 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. The Central Library at 285 East Walnut Street has been closed since May 3, 2021, because of seismic retrofit needs.
Some service continues. Items already on hold can be checked out on open days through Sept. 9, and eBooks and other digital materials remain available through the Libby, hoopla and CloudLibrary apps. Items due between Sept. 1 and Sept. 9 are now due Sept. 18, and cards set to expire between Aug. 18 and Sept. 9 have been extended to Sept. 30. The new catalog, Vega Discover, arrives Sept. 10.
The closure does not reach Altadena’s libraries. The Altadena Library District is an independent special district governed by a locally elected Board of Library Trustees, and it sets its own holiday calendar.
Branches reopen Tuesday, Sept. 8.
