A local man participating in an ultra-marathon race from Wrightwood to La Cañada through Angeles Crest was rescued by Pasadena Fire personnel after experiencing a heat-related emergency on Saturday, according to Lisa Derderian, spokesperson for the Pasadena Fire Department.
The incident occurred north of Hahamongna Park on the Gabrielino Trail, where the man became disoriented and unresponsive.
A Pasadena Fire Urban Search and Rescue crew was dispatched to the upper canyon using a utility terrain vehicle to access the patient, said Derderian.
Pasadena units, assisted by the Altadena Mountain Rescue Team, treated the patient and prepared him for transport by Los Angeles County Air Resources.
LA County Air 5 hoisted the patient from the canyon and transported him to Huntington Hospital, Derderian said.
The incident occurs during a severe heat wave that is gripping Southern California, with temperatures soaring above 100 degrees in many areas. Extreme heat can quickly lead to heat-related emergencies, even for highly fit individuals like ultra-marathon runners.
