A decade of nurturing young science fiction writers will culminate in a benefit event featuring celebrity readings and community celebration in South Pasadena next month.

The Light Bringer Project presents “Hopepunk: How We Rise” on Nov. 16 at the South Pasadena Public Library. The event supports Omega Sci-Fi Project, Los Angeles’ only free sci-fi creative writing program for teens.

Three television actors will read curated science fiction works at the gathering. Monnae Michaell of “Survival of the Thickest” and “Law and Order” headlines the readers. Peter James Smith, known for “Serenity” and “Westworld,” also will perform. Stephanie Czajkowski, who worked on “Star Trek (Picard)” and “Doom Patrol,” rounds out the trio.

The program has spent 10 years teaching high school students to explore social and environmental issues through speculative fiction.

Attendees can browse books at a pop-up stall from Undead Bookshop. A DJ will provide music. Free food and drinks will be served.

The event runs from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the library’s community room, 1115 El Centro Street. Those unable to attend can donate through the organization’s website.

Tickets are available on Eventbrite.
