The city of Pasadena is activating official cooling centers Friday through Sunday as forecasters predict scorching temperatures.
Robinson Park Recreation Center, 1081 N. Fair Oaks Ave., will serve as the cooling center Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The center can be reached at (626) 744-7330.
On Sunday, the cooling center will move to the Jackie Robinson Community Center, 1020 N. Fair Oaks Ave., which will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Its main phone number is (626) 744-7300.
The city’s splash pad will also have extended hours, which will be announced. The city has listed the La Pintoresca Park Splash Pad, 45 E. Washington Blvd., among its places to cool off.
Pasadena’s public libraries, along with Victory Park Recreation Center and Villa Parke Community Center, are not official cooling centers, but the city has said they offer air-conditioned space open to the public during their regular hours.
Pasadena Public Health officials advise residents to drink water frequently without waiting until they feel thirsty, limit outdoor activity, wear light, loose-fitting clothing and stay in shaded areas. They urge residents to check on neighbors, especially older adults and people with limited mobility, and to help them get to a cooling center. Leaving children or pets in parked cars is dangerous and illegal, officials said.
Pasadena Transit buses can take riders to any community center or library. Pasadena Dial-A-Ride members can schedule rides by calling (626) 791-7200.
Pasadena Water and Power asks customers to set thermostats to 78 degrees or higher and to reduce electricity use during peak hours, from 4 to 9 p.m. Power emergencies can be reported at (626) 744-4673, and water emergencies at (626) 744-4138.
Residents can sign up for emergency text and voice alerts through the Pasadena Local Emergency Alert System. The city posts forecast, cooling center and air quality information on its Extreme Weather Portal at CityOfPasadena.net.
