
A 28-year-old man was arrested the morning after a shooting on Ashtabula Street last Wednesday that left a 42-year-old man dead, Pasadena police said Monday.
Police received a 911 call at about 7:02 p.m. reporting shots fired near El Molino Avenue and Eldora Road. A SoundThinking automatic gunfire alert directed officers to an area in the 300 block of Ashtabula St., where they found expended cartridges indicating a shooting had occurred.
Shortly thereafter, a local hospital notified police dispatchers that a gunshot victim had been dropped off at the emergency room. Despite lifesaving efforts, the victim died of his wounds. He was identified as 42-year-old Jose Garcia.
Detectives from the Pasadena Police Robbery/Homicide Unit determined that several men were standing on Ashtabula Street when a minivan containing two additional subjects stopped alongside them. After a brief interaction, one of the men on the street pulled out a handgun and fired approximately 13 rounds at the minivan, striking the man in the front passenger seat. All parties fled, and the victim was dropped off at the hospital.
Investigators identified Everett Johnson, 28, as the shooting suspect, according police. Detectives located Johnson in Pasadena the following morning and arrested him without incident. A firearm was also allegedly recovered.
On Monday, Feb. 2, 2026, the case was presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney for filing consideration. The District Attorney filed the following charges: PC 187(a) — Murder, PC 245(a)(2) — Assault with a Firearm, and PC 29800(a)(1) — Possession of Firearm by a Felon
Johnson’s bail was set at $3,000,000.
