The Pasadena Police Department has begun a new educational program designed to teach children how to respond during emergencies.

The Kids’ Safety Academy, aimed at children ages 6-12 and their parents or guardians, began Tuesday, April 15 at Victory Park Recreation Center, Police Chief Eugene Harris announced.

The five-week program runs from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and features instruction from the Pasadena Police Department, Pasadena Fire Department and other City Departments. The Pasadena Police Foundation sponsors the academy.

According to the announcement, the academy provides young children and their families with the tools needed to stay safe and healthy.

The curriculum covers various safety topics including park safety, fire safety and disaster preparedness, environmental stewardship and recycling, bike rules and safe practices, the 9-1-1 phone system, community leadership, water skills and safety, and proper diet and nutrition.

The police department offers several other youth educational programs, including the Police Activities League, Explorer Program, and Junior Public Safety Academy. These programs provide the community’s youth with opportunities to learn about life skills and precautionary measures.

Those interested in any of these programs can contact Program Coordinator Susana Porras at susanaporras@cityofpasadena.net.
