A late-season heat wave brought record-breaking temperatures to Southern California on Oct. 28–29, prompting the Pasadena Public Health Department provides tips for heat exhaustion as temperatures reached 91–92 degrees locally.

The National Weather Service issued a Heat Advisory effective from 10:00 a.m. Tuesday through 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, warning of elevated health risks for sensitive populations. Downtown Los Angeles hit 97 degrees on Oct. 28, breaking a 1931 record, while temperatures in Pasadena peaked in the low 90s.

The City of Pasadena posted heat safety guidance on social media Oct. 28.

“Stay cool indoors. Drink water often, don’t wait until you are thirsty. Check on your neighbors, especially older adults. Wear light, loose-fitting clothing. Stay in the shade and wear sunscreen! Never leave a child or pet in the car. For life-threatening emergencies, dial 9-1-1. Avoid walking your pet or exercising during the hottest parts of the day.”

Recommendations to wear light clothing, seek shade, hydrate frequently, check on vulnerable neighbors, and avoid strenuous outdoor activity. The guidance also advises residents without air conditioning to visit public libraries or community centers for relief.

Temperatures will began to cool by Oct. 30, with forecasts returning to seasonal norms by early November. Residents are encouraged to sign up for Pasadena Local Emergency Alert System and Nixle notifications for future emergency updates.
