On Thursday, the Pasadena Unified School District’s Board of Education will deliberate on two recommendations for layoffs affecting 135 certificated and classified staff members, according to two agenda items.
The impending actions come in response to budget constraints and a realignment of educational services within the district, drafts of the resolutions showed.
In one draft, the Board said it would be necessary to eliminate or decrease the frequency of certain programs and services within the district by the beginning of the next school year. The draft also underscores the school district’s obligation, under Education Code Section 44955, to reduce or discontinue specific services to address financial challenges effectively.
Positions to be affected include Associate Superintendent, Counselor, Librarian, and various teaching roles across different school levels. The reduction amounts to 70 certificated full-time positions and 65 full-time equivalent classified staff positions.
The resolutions also outlined the criteria for determining terminations, considering factors such as employee seniority and competency in specific roles.
The drafts said the PUSD Superintendent would be responsible for issuing notices of recommendation not to reemploy affected employees.
Thursday’s meeting of the Board of Education begins at 4 p.m. at the Elbie J. Hickambottom Boardroom of the PUSD Education Center, located at 351 S. Hudson Ave. in Pasadena.
It is open to the public.
