The Pasadena Unified School District Board of Education President Jennifer Hall Lee and Superintendent Elizabeth Blanco, Ed.D. will announce their plan at a media briefing Thursday morning, January 15, to resume operations after the Eaton Fire forced the closure of all District campuses. Five school sites suffered severe damage in the blaze, prompting officials to develop a comprehensive strategy for completing the 2024-25 academic year.

The District has been assessing options in the face of the unprecedented tragedy and has decided on a plan of action to carry the District through to the end of the 2024-25 school year.

The fire heavily damaged Eliot Arts Magnet Middle School, Franklin Elementary (which had been closed since 2020), and three charter school locations at Edison, Loma Alta, and Noyes. District maintenance crews and hundreds of private contractors have already removed 10 tons of debris, with deep cleaning and classroom sanitizing beginning January 10. Crews will continue to clean and sanitize campuses as they become available.

While campuses remain closed since January 8, students with access to devices and electricity are engaging in self-directed studies. The District has established three locations for Grab and Go meal service and launched comprehensive support services including housing assistance, child care through community partners, and other critical supports. These resources can be found on the District’s Fire Relief website.

To help the community heal and reconnect, Pasadena Unified School District will also host a “Pasadena Unified Community Connector” event on Friday, January 17, from 2-4 p.m. at Pasadena City College, Parking Lot 3, located at 1570 E Colorado Blvd., Pasadena, CA 91106. The gathering will feature free food, music, art activities, and games for students, while Pasadena Unified School District departments will be on hand with information and resources for families. Free parking will be available in Parking Structure 4.

The Pasadena Unified School District serves 13,900 students across 24 schools and five children’s centers throughout Pasadena.
