The City of Pasadena was to begin resurfacing work on Arroyo Boulevard Tuesday, with construction activities starting as early as 2 a.m. in order to complete the entire Arroyo Boulevard within the same day, city officials announced.
The project called for street grinding from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m., followed by asphalt overlay from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Arroyo Boulevard work is part of Pasadena’s Annual Citywide Street Resurfacing and ADA Improvement Program for Fiscal Year 2025, which commenced in April and will continue through September 2025 if weather permitting.
The $10 million program will improve up to 41 streets covering over ten centerline miles of asphalt pavement throughout the city. Work typically includes replacement of uplifted curb and gutter, sidewalk repairs, installation of new curb ramps, adjustment of utility manholes, replacement of signal loop detectors, and installation of striping and raised pavement markers. The work also consisted of the intersection improvement on Seco Street at Rosemont Avenue.
Arroyo Boulevard was among the major thoroughfares closed on Sunday for the Rose Bowl Half Marathon & 5K, just two days before the scheduled resurfacing work. The current project will also resurfacing the following streets around the Rose Bowl: Rosemont Ave, Seco Stret, Rose Bowl Drive, and North Arroyo Boulevard to Fwy 210.
City officials note that systematic resurfacing at regular intervals prolongs the service life of roadway pavement and significantly lowers maintenance costs by reducing the need for full reconstruction.
The project aligns with the City Council’s goals to improve, maintain and enhance public facilities and infrastructure while improving mobility and accessibility throughout Pasadena.
Motorists are advised to expect delays and consider alternate routes during construction hours.
