City utility to replace 90-year-old pipeline

Pasadena Water and Power will begin replacing a 90-year-old water main along Grand Avenue on Monday, January 6. The project is expected to be completed by the end of August 2025, the utility announced Thursday.

“The 6-to-4-inch line will be replaced by a 12-to-8-inch ductile iron mainline pipe, which will reinforce PWP’s water service reliability in the area,” the announcement said.

To minimize disruption, PWP has outlined specific measures:

“Construction efforts will be contained to approximately one block at a time, starting near the intersection of Green Street to the north and proceeding south on Grand Avenue until reaching California Boulevard,” according to PWP.

“Water service will be intermittently interrupted and will be noticed 48 hours in advance.”

Work will occur Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., unless specifically notified, with temporary traffic control and detour signs posted throughout construction.

PWP, which “provides electricity to more than 65,000 customers within Pasadena” and “delivers water to nearly 38,000 households and businesses in Pasadena and adjacent communities in the San Gabriel Valley,” operates as “a nonprofit public service owned and operated by the City of Pasadena for the benefit of its customers and the community.”
