The Pasadena Unified School District Board of Education elected new leadership and welcomed incoming members on Monday, Dec. 9, setting the stage for the 2025 academic year.

Jennifer Hall Lee will serve as Board President, with Tina Fredericks as Vice President and Yarma Velázquez as Clerk, following a unanimous vote during the Board’s organizational meeting.

“I am honored to serve as President of the Board of Education and look forward to fostering a culture of collaboration and trust. Together, we can ensure that every decision we make prioritizes the success of our students, families, and staff,” Hall Lee said.

Patrick Cahalan, who represented District 4 since 2015, stepped down from his position. The Board swore in newly elected member Scott Harden for District 4, alongside re-elected members Hall Lee and Fredericks. Elissa Barrett, executive director of the Western Justice Center, administered the oath of office.

The Board welcomed six student representatives: Yul Hur and Adeline Wick from Blair High School, Lula Matsura and Germon Maxey from John Muir High School, and Allison Leo and Violet Beach from Pasadena High School.

“This meeting exemplifies the ‘power of us’ — the united efforts of our Board, educators, families, and community partners to build a bright future for our students,” said Superintendent Elizabeth Blanco, Ed.D., highlighting the Board’s and District’s commitment to advancing student achievement. “In the year ahead, we will continue to focus on academic excellence and innovation to prepare all students for success.”

During the meeting, the Board reaffirmed the District’s vision, mission, and values.

Other key actions included setting 2025 meeting dates, approving the governance calendar, assigning schools to Board members, appointing committee members, and authorizing District signators.

“The steps we have taken tonight reflect our commitment to thoughtful governance and a shared vision for student success,” Hall Lee said. “The Pasadena Unified School District community can look forward to a year marked by strong leadership, collaboration, and an unwavering focus on the success of every learner.”
